Amazing Madagascar Animals

 

You might be surprised to know that the ancestors of the current day's mammals and birds landed on the island of Madagascar as far back as 60 million years ago. This discovery is particularly impressive, as climate modeling indicated that there were strong currents during the peak periods of the continent's climate, which might have helped the animals reach Madagascar without dying from thirst. Additionally, many small animals have low metabolic rates, and may have been in a state of torpor or hibernation.

In Madagascar, you'll find two hundred species of birds, including many of which are endemic to the island. One of the most famous species, the elephant bird, was once nearly ten feet long and weighed more than a ton. Unfortunately, a number of factors including introduced species, humans and habitat loss led to its extinction. Another species of animal you may have heard of but never seen is the Madagascar frog, which is estimated to number about 300 different species. Perhaps the most interesting of these is the tomato frog, which secretes a sticky glue-like substance.

Another notable species is the chameleon. The species found in Madagascar are so different from other places in the world that no two are the same. This means that Madagascar has a large number of endemic species, making it one of the most diverse places to find unique animals. In addition to lemurs, this island also has more than a hundred different species of birds. There are even frogs and amphibians in Madagascar!
